The Journey of African-American Insurance Professionals

Marsh and NAAIA Release Groundbreaking Study at NAAIA Conference

Marsh is committed to advancing the critical conversation about increasing diversity and inclusion within the insurance industry.

Martin South, President, US and Canada division at Marsh announced Marsh’s release of the ground-breaking study, The Journey of African-American Insurance Professionals, at the National African American Insurance Association (NAAIA) Annual Conference & Empowerment Summit at the end of September. Our partnership with NAAIA and the African-American community on this project has been instrumental in creating a tangible platform to expand and build future action on race within the Insurance Industry.

While issues such as unconscious bias, nepotism and favoritism in the hiring process, or a lack of networking connections are cause for underrepresentation, the study found that these are only pieces of a larger puzzle. Understanding the dynamics at play will help insurers, brokers, professionals, and other stakeholders take action to attract, retain, and enhance the careers of African Americans in the insurance industry.

I'm pleased that Marsh has taken the lead in commissioning this survey, which has revealed the career paths of African-American professionals and ignited enthusiasm for ongoing discussion and progress to strengthen diversity in our industry. I am thankful for the opportunity I now have to share this study with all of NAAIA’s conference attendees and members, and hope that we can continue to partner together to create solutions that drive business, talent, and diversity.
